We are partnering with local companies to provide our training curriculum in other countries. We started the Mastering Unit Testing course after we found many teams have started writing unit tests, but very few have experienced the benefits of hard-core test-driven development.

“You have some experience writing unit tests, but wonder how you could get more out of unit testing. Register for the Mastering Unit Testing training to experience how test driven development can make development faster and more enjoyable. You’ll learn how working test-first lets you create better designed code, and understand why unit testing techniques that are ’simple’ in theory can be difficult to practice. Past participants have experienced less defects in production code, as well as higher velocity, which leads to happier clients and more fun in your job!”

See the Mastering Unit Testing page on the iLean site for registration and details. The first course is scheduled for September 24 and 25. After that we’ve also got our Mastering legacy code, November 16 and 17, also in Antwerp.

While I was on holiday, Marc started creating a new product from scratch. He’d been walking around with a problem he wanted to solve and couldn’t find anything that he liked. Marc also wanted to try out the Scala programming language, to see if it would be worth using, and thought nothing helps you focus more than building an actual product.

I didn’t get it. But I gave Marc a hand anyway, because we had previously decided that QWAN values:

supporting someone who has a passion over discussing the business case at length

Variazione in scala di grigi by Eric Perrone

Why didn’t I get it?

Marc had a problem that he needed solving for himself, and he was obstinate about it, while I already had solved that thing for myself. Or so I thought…

We started building, and me not being that interested in the product helped. I kept asking: what is the Minimum Viable Product? What do we need to do to go into production, at least to start using it for ourselves? When can we invite others? How could we generate revenue out of it?

While we were building together, the idea for the product already started to shift. Even though neither of us could really use it yet. Just by looking at the things’ user interface, I’d say to Marc: “If I were to work with it, this-and-this would take me too much time (and turn me away)”, and then we’d have a discussion and things change.

Eventually, when we reached the point that we could deploy it in such a way that we could both use it, I started using it too.

And then I got it… I thought my needs were already covered by what I was using, but Marc’s idea was just slightly better than what I was using already. And that leads me to a puzzle: many potential users will have the same idea as me: they already have a solution that works for them, so they are not going to try this new thing out… How do you get someone who’s already got a solution to try out something new that might work even better?

In our quest to put into words and pictures how important context is to choose practices, to show that there is no one-size-fits all solution for process and change strategy, Marc Evers and me went on tour last year with a presentation on Cultural Patterns. Take a look over at InfoQ – Beyond Agile: Cultural Patterns.

Willem and Marc introduce cultural patterns that can be found in software organizations. By understanding the cultural patterns then you can better adapt your practices.

The presentation starts off a bit slow, but picks up after the introduction. At the time we were incorporating some feedback about our presentations, most notably that we said too little about ourselves, so that the audience had difficulty understanding where we are coming from, and why we had to say something about the subject.

The videographer and editor did a good job at choosing the shots – shooting a pair presentation with one camera is challenging, especially since Marc and I are on opposite sides of the projected slide. The last part of the presentation was helped a lot by questions from the back of the room, I remember Keith Braithwaite and David Anderson (you can hear them faintly in the background) and there were one or two others. Next time I guess we could repeat more of the questions so they are more audible on the video.

A surprising thing we ran into was that Agile was not as mainstream as we thought – a surprising small number of participants put up their hands when we asked whether they were using (at least some) practices connected to Agile Software Development. Luckily, the patterns are independent of this, so we hope those who were/are doing something else get value from seeing various ways to organize development. It’s all about choosing an approach that fits and makes you more effective.

In hindsight the presentation became more graphical and less textual with each iteration. We’ve left the presentation alone for some time, and now have new ideas on presenting the material, as well as some new ideas on how to place various approaches to organize development. We’d love to hear from you about opportunities to perform new iterations…

Marc Evers and I were a bit buzzed… We hoped, this year, to start announcing Agile Open earlier (and, unlike last year, not keep repeating ‘we should get started’). Well, unlike last year, we didn’t keep repeating it. We just didn’t get round tuit…

So last week, we finally got together around a whiteboard, decided that we did want to hold it in June (like last year, and as we planned), but we didn’t have a location etc. and didn’t want to spend as much time as last year in sending out invoices, dealing with exceptions etc.

So, we decided to go with an affordable conference location and leave things like hotel, dinner out of the basic package. That means we can send out just one type of invoice – you come two days, or you don’t, and beside diet preferences there are no options. Well, you can of course volunteer (we got spontaneous offers for that. ) or sponsor. We also decided to cap the conference at just thirty participants, so we could go with the venue. One of the reasons being, we thought we can’t get that many participants in a month anyway… Surprise, surprise, sending out the invite to a couple of mailinglists, and we’ve already passed the twenty participants mark. And we have some sponsors as well (we didn’t expect many in this timeframe, so we’re pleasantly surprised. Now we have to make sponsor packages and facilitate the other volunteers so we can self-organize )

So, without much further ado, I’m proud to announce the next

Agile Open Europe 2008

will take place in Utrecht, NL on June 5th and 6th. A vibrant place to push the envelope and do business together. And yes, we will find Belgian Beer – one participant listed that as a dietary requirement Looks like its’ going to be good fun again. See you there!

And if you ’still’ haven’t registered – there’s a handful of places left…
